Jug, Spotted Glass and Mandarins

I have been scrounging around in my cupboards looking for interesting things to make up a still life. I chose this jug and spotted glass, and I always have fruit in bowls in the kitchen, and this is the result. I really like painting or sketching a still life and would love to be able to paint like magical Australian artist (and National Treasure) Margaret Olley, whose arrangements always look so beautiful. The colour is amazing, jumping right out at you from the canvas.

I have been painting very quickly (read 'enthusiastic!') (which incidentally means "filled with God") and my challenge is, to slow myself down and concentrate on the technical side of things, so that I produce a better result. This sounds all very serious, but I'm actually still having fun!

  1. Why not use the "fast" one as a first draft and redo it slowly? Then just keep the one you like best! Love this pic.

  2. Whoa! I LOVE this painting - very free and funky! I am also pleased to learn the meaning of enthusiastic, oh-cool-one.

Sometimes fast works best ... or I overdue and kill the piece. I am posting my new painting today, which was done very fast ... out in the sunshine and breeze on Sunday. I'll look forward to your professional opinion of it!

  3. I love this painting and it's lovely colours. Yes Margaret Olley's paintings are beautiful too...but a completely different style from you. It would be like comparing apples to oranges (or whatever fruit you happen to have in the bowl!). Your bright, free style is uniquely, enthusiastically, you!

  4. I would want a Patti painting over an Ollie painting any day of the week. NO JOKE.

  7. Completely agree with Ei (dropping inhere via her page) I would rather have your work than M. Olley ANY DAY! Great that she inspires you, but don't lose your unique style ~ which is TOTALLY FAB by the way, seriously. This painting reminds me of the St.Ives school of painters, your use of colour is really vibrant and instinctive. Great work.

P.S. I LOVE the fish you sent to Ei :-)
